All direct impact techniques leave the prepared surface with microcracks, resulting in a weakened plane that consequently affects the bonding of the old and new interfaces. The hydrodemolition method has demonstrated the ability to significantly increase bond strength by removing concrete without damaging the prepared bond interface, where other techniques can produce inadequate surface resulting in poor bond.
Hydrodemolition is a water jetting method where a high pressure water jet with approximately 1000bar (14,500PSI) in some cases 1400bar (20,000PSI) and a flow rate up to 50-60gpm (180-230lpm) is used to break up materials into small rubble as a result of both the impact of the water on the surface and the pressurization of the internal pores, voids and cracks.
